Mokau is one of the earliest settled townships in the history of NZ and is famous for its whitebait and a popular location for fishing and outdoor recreation. The historian James Cowan was so inspired by the natural beauty of the Mokau River that he wrote in 1911; “Of all my loves among the rivers of New Zealand, the Mokau is the one because of its aloofness and its atmosphere of adventure and exploration, for its almost unbroken forests and its many rapids that give the spice of excitement to the voyage and above all for its beauty..."
Mokau is a maori word pronounced “more-co” and means “winding stream”, Mokau was the resting place of Ngati Toa chief, Turi.

Bach54 Guest Comments
. Loved our stay. Bach54 was perfect. I loved the lovely touch with the flowers, have not come across that with 'Bookabach' before, very nice touch, thank-you. We enjoyed a fabulous river boat trip yesterday followed by a relaxing session on the beach fishing and the whitebait, fish and chips! was excellent. You have a beautiful spot at Mokau and especially at Bach54. (Joan Chatfield Photography 2016).
. Bach54 has to be seen to be believed. What you see on the internet is exactly what you get. Spectacular views and walks along the beach. Its clean, comfortable and adore the log fire. You feel you are just in paradise, we just love it. Whoever has the pleasure of staying there enjoy it as much as we did. This beats any fancy hotel/motel. We will be back again. (S. Sherley, Hamilton NZ).
. Thanks for our stay there. As ex moteliers we found your accommodation superb. The cleanliness, the facilities, the appointment and fittings etc were just wonderful as well as the views etc. We could not find fault nor any recommendations and would recommend it to anyone to stay there. Superb well done. (Ian & Kay).
. Absolute paradise! Quiet, peaceful and private. Bach54 is on my list of places to go again. Mokau is a lovely small town with great food and beautiful scenery. a great little museum, with helpful people. This all rounded off the best two days away my wife and I have had for some time! (Holidayhouses website 2013).
. Sunday Star Times review 22 March 2009 “If you want a chill-out place, this is it. The views of the sea, river and Mt Taranaki in the background (on a clear day) are amazing. Bach54 would be the place to relax at any time of the year. This old-style bach has been renovated to be modern and still cosy. The rooms are beautifully decorated. Everything is clean. The garden is beautiful and spacious. The owners are friendly and helpful and they have thought of everything that a guest might need. Definitely on my list of places to come back to”
. We really enjoyed our stay at Bach54 it was well appointed, had everything we wanted, was quiet and private, beautiful location and environment and was incredibly good value for all of this and it was just what we were looking for PLUS the added bonus was that I caught heaps of baby kahawai down at the river mouth – it was a lot of fun – Great Fishing!!!. The only regret we have is that we wished we had another 5 days there! (Sue & Peter)
. Lovely view and location, the owners gave us total privacy which was how we would have wanted it. The bach is very well outfitted, really nothing missing. Extremely comfortable feather and down bedding and pillows, and there would have been washing powder should we have needed it, this is a first to see that provided in a bach. There were lovely fresh flowers put in 2 vases upon our arrival, a very lovely welcome. Thank-you for a great time. (Sue and Michael 2016).
. "it’s not often a place lives so entirely up to expectations". (Emma).
. Absolutely amazing! We have just spent the night in the most beautiful accommodation we have ever stayed in. The location is perfect, the hosts are extremely lovely and they have done an amazing job with the bach. They have thought of absolutely everything you could possibly need. Thanks so much, we will definitely be back.
. Thank-you so much for letting us share your lovely spot. Words cannot express how wonderful your secret location is! The pictures on your website are an indication of what you are going to experience but when you actually stand and take in the surroundings it is even better. The lovely cosy bach is just right and we felt very much at home and the wood fire was a welcome bonus. We had a great three nights with wonderful walks on the beach and great views of the white baiters trying their luck. Will definitely be back in the very near future.
(Caroline & Peter Viskovich, Whangarei ).
. Most enjoyable stay at Bach54. It was a great location for us to go exploring around the area which has some stunning countryside. We went on a number of walks and also enjoyed a 5 hour adventure at Waitomo Caves. Always a pleasure to come back to Bach54 at the end of a 'busy' day. The bach was really clean and comfortable and had everything that we needed and the "fire was fantastic for those chilly nights" (VirginiaMo2 Bookabach, 2015).
. Absolutely immaculately clean, log fire all ready to go and fresh flowers to greet you. Lovely people. Thank you so much- I didn't want to leave. (Jen Tooman, Bookabach website 2013).
. "I’ve not experienced such peace and tranquility ever as I have enjoyed at Bach54. You truly have a slice of paradise here and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to spend some time here". (Lisa).

"Bach54, a delightful hideaway that combines the charm of a typical Kiwi bach with modern appointments. Bach54 offers either the stand alone, three-bedroom bach or an upstairs two-bedroom tourist flat. Both are private, sparkling and well-appointed, with fabulous views and log fires. Sheets, towels, soap, tea and coffee are provided, and there’s free wireless broadband"
. We have been talking about Bach54 ever since we got back…telling everyone what a great place it is and how much we loved being there. We are coming back for sure! Thank-you for the way you looked after us, it was wonderful to have the linen supplied and even to have the towels refreshed after a few days. Having the free internet access was also much appreciated. All I can say is thank-you, thank-you, thank-you! (John & Renee)
. This is just a note to thank-you both for accommodating us this week we loved your cosy, spotless, trendy cliff top haven. Spent much of the time at the window watching the sea and the weather change. The environment is certainly dramatic here and Bach54 lets us down right in the middle of it all, mountain, sea, river and bush – in kiwi coastal style. It’s very clean, warm, comfy and attractive, vintage with a modern twist and the small details meant a lot to us, such as the vases of flowers, surround stereo sound, wood burner, simple and our own personal recycling station!!!. We’ve experienced all kinds of accommodation all over the world and the three of us agree that this is awesome. Thanks for sharing it and we appreciated also your warm greeting, if you’ll have us again, we’ll be back. (Andrea).
. Thank you so much for this opportunity of a break away, so restful, so relaxing, just wonderful. We certainly appreciate the bird calls, the noise of the surf, the wow! of the wind, the quiet of the bush and the laid back life/pace of Mokau. Then there is the all inspiring, ever changing views - fabulous. You present this wonderful hideaway so beautifully, everything is just so nice, the cleanliness is absolutely tops. We certainly appreciated your efforts. Never again will we be able to pass through Mokau without recalling our wonderful memories. Yes a wonderful few days.
. We did so LOVE your place, almost don't want to tell others how special it is incase we can't get a reservation when we next want to visit. Thanks so much again.
. This beautiful place has become my second home. The views, gentle hosts and ambience have allowed my Creative-Muse to quietly return, for which I will be forever grateful. This sanctuary, for me, is a very Spiritual and restorative space: the sound of the sea, beach walks and the frequent visits to the garden by Tui and other birds, make it even more special. I am a regular visitor, and stay for over a week every time. I love it.
. The Breeze Radio Station Our relationship with Bach54 is a valued one. They offer the kind of experience that our listeners are after, so it is a perfect match for us. They are friendly and helpful; nothing is ever too much trouble. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Bach54 on our Easy Escape weekend promotion, with the help of Bach54 it was hugely successful.
. We really enjoyed our stay at the bach, we’ve both lived and worked in various hotels, hostels etc and never stayed in a place that has everything plus spotlessly clean. It’s a real credit to you. We both wish it could’ve been longer but sadly we had to come back to work at the mountain.
(Gavin & Sandra. 2012).
. We appreciated and were impressed by the very professional approach in all aspects of which Bach54 is managed and operated. We plan to come and stay again in the future as it is a special place with all its natural attributes.
. Thank-you for providing such comfortable accommodation and the million dollar views! Don’t change a thing! We are telling all our friends and hope to return next year. (Joanne).
. It was so lovely having the fire going and to wake up in the morning and sitting up in bed watching the waves roll in and Mt Taranaki standing majestically in the back ground – it was the start of a wonderful weekend, thanks very much. (Kevin & Bev).
. A magical home with a lovely feeling. This is obviously a treasured place that is very special to its owners and we are so lucky that they share it with us.
